Switching Priorities
The key channels gaining sales from competitors
Just like previous years, supermarkets and mini markets have continued to gain sales, as shoppers switched over from other channels such as hypermarkets and general trade. In total, they have shifted RM 74.9M in spend from hypermarkets to supermarkets, and RM 73.7M from general trade to supermarkets. This indicates that shoppers are prioritising supermarkets over established hypermarkets, as well as small-format general trade.
Mini markets have also gained sales due to shoppers switching: RM 58.0M in spend has come from general trade, with RM 57.2M coming in from hypermarkets. Supermarket shoppers also made the switch to mini markets, shifting a total of RM 22.7M in spend.
This indicates that the growing trend of shoppers prioritising supermarkets and mini markets is not set to stop anytime soon. These outlets can offer the most competitive prices, whereas hypermarkets may not be able to do the same on a consistent basis, and general trade retailers do not tend to engage in price wars.
